Who are the people in your neighbourhood?
Exploring multicultural connections through community music
with Charlene Pauls & Natalie Fasheh, Mosaic Music Collective
“Mosaic Music Collective” is a community choral project that creates a place for people to gather and build bridges among cultural and generational groups through singing. In an era when rhetoric is increasingly divisive towards the “other,” music provides a platform to explore connections that unite us, as we sing in different languages and learn about different cultural perspectives.
Presenters Natalie Fasheh, a Palestinian-Jordanian newcomer, and Charlene Pauls will share music that has been successful in this endeavour, and will engage participants in discussing nuances and sensitivities that arise when building inclusive community choral projects for newcomers.
Workshop Objectives:
- To outline the genesis and development of “Mosaic Music Collective,” a Community Choral Project in Oakville, ON
- To demonstrate methods used to build bridges through singing multicultural music that create intergenerational connections, and foster relationships between newcomers to Canada and established residents
- To engage participants in exploring ways of applying methods described above to their own choirs and communities
